Cluttering
Cluttering is a fluency disorder that affects the rate, rhythm, and clarity of speech. Speech may sound too fast, uneven, or unclear, which can make it difficult for others to understand. Unlike stuttering, individuals who clutter are often less aware that their speech is hard to follow.

A person who clutters may show the following characteristics:
-
Speaking very quickly or at an uneven rate
-
Dropping or shortening syllables and words
-
Reduced speech clarity or mumbling
-
Using fillers such as “uh,” “um,” or “you know”
-
Changing ideas or sentences partway through speaking
-
Difficulty organizing thoughts when speaking

Cluttering often becomes more noticeable during longer conversations, storytelling, or when explaining ideas.

Similar to stuttering, cluttering includes both visible speech characteristics and less visible challenges that may affect communication. While the speech itself may sound fast or unclear, a child may also experience frustration, academic difficulties, or reduced confidence when communicating.

Signs of Cluttering in Children

Children who show the following signs may be at risk for cluttering:
-
Speech that sounds rushed, unclear, or disorganized
-
Difficulty telling stories or explaining events in a clear sequence
-
Inconsistent speech clarity (clear at times, unclear at other times)
-
Frequent use of fillers or revisions
-
Limited awareness that others have difficulty understanding them

Assessment and Therapy

A comprehensive fluency assessment helps determine whether a child presents with cluttering, stuttering, or a combination of both.
If cluttering is diagnosed, therapy may focus on:
-
Improving speech clarity and pacing
-
Increasing awareness of speech patterns
-
Developing strategies to help the child slow down and organize speech
-
Supporting confidence and effective communication
