Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) refer to a group of neurologically based conditions that represent a spectrum of difficulties in socialization, communication, and behaviour. Speech Partners offers consultation, assessment and therapy services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, We work in partnership with families to set specific therapy goals in order to help children with Autism Spectrum Disorders achieve their unique potential. These goals may include improving

  • expressive language skills (use of language)

  • receptive language skills (understanding of language)

  • articulation (speech) skills

  • social communication and pragmatic skills 

  • play skills (pretend play,  imaginative and social play)

  • shared and joint attention 

  • academic and literacy skills

  • challenging behaviours and non-compliance

  • use of alternative augmentative communication systems (alternative communication methods used to supplement or replace language)

 

 Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders may exhibit any of the following behaviours or difficulties: 

  • limited or absent language

  • delayed or disordered speech

  • poor vocabulary skills 

  • poor eye contact 

  • lack of response to other people's feelings

  • poor or lack of pretend or social play

  • social difficulties with their peer group 

  • poor or lack of turn-taking skills in conversation or play

  • poor or lack of initiation skills in speech or in play

  • echolalia (repetition of another person's words, phrases, or part of words) 

  • over-sensitive reaction or no response to a sensory stimulus, such as light or sound

  • repetitive hands or body movements

  • repetitive behaviours (e.g. repeatedly lining up and spinning toys in a certain way, rather than  playing with them)

  • aggressive behaviours

  • screaming, crying or whining  for no reason

  • self-injurious behaviors such as head banging and self-biting
