Math Language
Math Language refers to the specific communication skills required to understand and express mathematical concepts. Many children and adolescents with learning difficulties or neurodevelopmental differences struggle not with math itself, but with the language of math—including understanding instructions, following multi-step problems, using math vocabulary, and translating their thinking into symbols or written explanations.
At Speech Partners, we offer consultation, assessment, and therapy services to support children and youth who experience challenges with math language. We work in partnership with families to set individualized goals that strengthen comprehension and communication in mathematics and related academic areas.
These goals may include improving:
-
Understanding and following verbal and written math instructions
-
Comprehension and use of math vocabulary (e.g., sum, difference, product, quotient)
-
Explaining problem-solving steps clearly, both orally and in writing
-
Translating ideas and solutions into symbols and equations
-
Understanding and answering WH-questions in academic contexts
-
Confidence in using language to support academic success
Children with math language difficulties may exhibit some of the following challenges:
-
Trouble understanding math word problems
-
Difficulty following multi-step math instructions
-
Limited use or misunderstanding of math vocabulary
-
Difficulty explaining how they solved a problem
-
Struggles translating verbal explanations into symbols or equations
-
Trouble answering math-related WH-questions (e.g., “What is the total?” “How many are left?”)
-
Avoidance of math tasks due to language barriers rather than conceptual difficulty
